I had a class yesterday that just ranked as one of the worst ever. What made it sadder was how young they were. I had a class the first year I taught at that age who were just as horrible and they split them up the next year. Seems it was simply the dynamic and chemistry going on and they were angels after that.
This sentiment will offend many, but it makes sense; we are born savage and need to be socialized to function in society. Before people start pelting me with outrage, consider the fact that when we are born, all we know are sensations. Discomfort, like hunger, cold, warmth, etc. What does a baby do? Cry, scream, yes of course defecate and then react to the discomfort that creates. When the people responsible do not show them the care they need, set boundaries and parameters for behavior as they grow, what happens? They remain savage, unsocialized and unless they learn otherwise, become a burden on society. In your classroom, that also means they deprive students around them from gaining the knowledge you are there to provide. That used to annoy me, I loved school and never understood friends that would complain about having to be there. I hope today has been better for you. π
Doesn’t offend me at all. Train up a child the way they are to go. It’s a simple instruction.
The group I had today was DELIGHTFUL! I’ve had them before and they are just the cutest things!!!! After that group yesterday… I told their teacher that the group yesterday would make you want to go out and tie your tubes!
Glad you had a better group of students today. If only the misbehaved ones could get a clue to what they are doing is only short-changing themselves. That is where (at least in my case) many of us learn to self-sabotage . . . in our youth, not the classroom π
Sadly, I have discovered that those who don’t wish to learn and are behavior problems, could really care less about those who do. It’s all about them. It’s a sense of entitlement where the world revolves around them or they have this sense that whatever they do, doesn’t affect anyone else, or they could care less that it affects anyone else. So long as they get to do, what they want to do.
“…where the world revolves around them…” Is an endemic problem as I’ve experienced it in the retail world I live in. Many walk around like they are in their own home, be it in my shop or another store. Leaving their beverages, food, waste, whatever, anywhere for anyone else to clean up after them. People are no longer embarrassed to be ignorant, shallow or self absorbed to the point of idiocy. It is like no one cares if they children are intelligent contributing members of society anymore.
Some years back, I worked for a large retail chain and I recall vividly a woman telling her son, oh just set that down. They have people who are paid to put things away like that. I informed her and the child – uhm… no, we’re not. We’re not paid to be your mama or your maid. I don’t think she look – or the finger – she gave me was very nice.
One that sticks in mind is a woman who sat her baby (could barely sit up so young) in our store and said “I will be right back, 20 minutes at the most” to the baby, not me, as she ran out the front entrance. I should have called DCFS, but my outrage at the insanity ruled and I was after her to say that she could not leave a baby anywhere, ANYWHERE, alone. What could she be thinking? She stomped back into the store, picked up the baby, then said; “bitch” before walking back out. I’ve thick skin so that hardly registered, what did register was this, did I make the right decision by not calling the police or DCFS? (Division of Child and Family Services) But yeah, I’m a bitch, don’t care π
In your shoes, if it were me, the minute she called me a bitch, I would have told her (and done it) I can still call the police, in fact, I think I will!
Holy cow the stupidity of people!!! Now, here in Georgia last summer, we had a problem with moms leaving unattended children – usually 2 with the younger being 4 or 5 with the older being 10 to 12 – alone all day at the library or the mall while she worked. Now, I see this as a financial problem on the mom’s behalf, being unable to afford a sitter or daycare, but dang (and in both cases, they had been doing it for some days before someone noticed) No one left a BABY alone! That one takes the cake!
Leaving a baby that can barely sit up was the worst I personally experienced. So yeah, that one took the cake. We were in a mall for 22 years and you could watch people drive up daily (when school was out) and see kids dropped off outside the mall where those kids would be left all day long. Really got tired of stupid women calling me to complain about what their child had purchased in our store that day. Bitch that I am, enjoyed telling them it was illegal to leave anyone under the age of 12 unattended anywhere and if they would so kindly provide me with their name and address, I would be happy to discuss the $3 purchase with them after I spoke with DCFS. Needless to say, no one was interested in complaining further about what or how much was purchased after leaving their child in the mall for 8+ hours. I do sympathise with those in poor financial situations when they need the work but don’t make enough for child care. Putting your children in danger by leaving them at the mall (library or wherever) unattended has got to be a common solution for many people. However, those clueless idiots that actually complain to the people who have been unknowingly forced to be their unpaid babysitters? Well, those morons deserve a solid slap from this bitch. Not that it would help them make better parenting decisions, but I’d get some satisfaction out of the deal. heh
sure, I went to bookstores and libraries on my own and with siblings, but was raised to be responsible about it and we were not abandoned there all day or even half a day and that is essentially what is happening, people are abandoning those kids for huge chunks of time in the day. No food, supervision, responsible adult to watch out for them. Those kids can’t be easy to work with in classroom settings either.
I can’t imagine why anyone would think a library or a mall would remotely keep a child occupied or entertained for a set period of time. Granted, I’m a bookaholic and am content to sit for hours and hours just reading, but really people… for real???
True, I could sit and read for hours at the public library (that reminds me of early dates w/hubs when we did that) but vast majority of adults don’t do that, much less kids. Energy for one, unless I was absorbed reading something, my brother and I were running, climbing, riding bikes, fighting, causing trouble. Lots of kids are more like that than not, it’s being a kid. They cannot be left to their own devices unsupervised and not at least once in a while get into trouble. π
I have no doubt that she tried it before and afterwards. Indiscriminately reproducing people tend to be the brightest ones I think. (insert sarcastic tone here)
No No coke, eat or drink something you REALLY like.
I REALLY REALLY like Coca-Cola!!!
okay, then it is the right thing to handle a ‘suck’ day! I prefer chocolate,
hugs and I hope it will be better tomorrow!
I would love chocolate, but I’m not going out to get it. We have chocolate chip cookies. That’s doing fine as well.
Sorry to hear that, Zee. Looks like this is not your month… Can only get better, eh?
There has been a great gnashing of teeth. Even my mom is walking wide. She brought DOWN the cookies from hiding. That’s…. yeah.
Sorry to hear your day is sucking the big green donkey-D, but at least you gave us a nice image to look at π

My parents could leave me in a bookstore for hours and I’d be happy happy happy! Wouldn’t bother a soul!
Some folks today, however… entitled. It used to be applicable to few and now it is embraced by so many.

Absolutely agreed.
You know what’s scary? You have to wonder how many times that idiot has done that before, or tried it afterwards.
