What was not on my to do list

31 Tuesday May 2016

I have a to do list this week.

  1. Do Laundry. (Later in the week. I’m tripping next week.)
  2. Grocery Store. (Not a big trip. I spent 270.00 last month and I still have food)
  3. Buy a new phone. The old one is useless except to text and act as an alarm clock
  4. Unpack 20 boxes. Probably books. Meh. Not really meh.
  5. Finish my Big Bang – A Wraith in the Mist. No, that’s all I’m telling you.
  6. Blood work at doctor’s. Meh. Really. Meh.
  7. Visit closer yarn shop. Like I don’t have enough yarn now.
  8. Buy a vacuum cleaner. I have 2. Both are shot. I have a third, but it’s still at my mom’s. I think.
  9. Pay bills.
  10. Deal with other financial shit.
  11. ***sniff sniff*** take a shower. Now.

What was NOT on the To-Do list is piss off the 2 men who mean the most to me. Okay, I’ve pissed off THREE men who mean a LOT to me. And that wasn’t on the To-Do List.

Suitor is pissed off. I’ve been yelled at. Okay, I was texted in ALL CAPS HOW COULD YOU YOU MADE ME A PROMISE….

le sigh.

And he thinks I’m being rather nonchalant about the whole thing. Which I’m NOT…

And my son is standing in the doorway – You’ve not done WHAT? MOM! You made a promise!!!!….

Third man – GOOOOOD friend – when informed of the situation – What? Oh yeah, they have a right to be mad! I’m mad!

sigh.

If I had ice cream, I’d go eat it. That would only make the problem worse. However, since I’m so upset, and ice cream would exasperate the problem, I’ve participated in my favorite therapy that doesn’t include food…

DragonFly tunic

It will arrive in a week or two.

Zee Reads

I have a problem.

I have too many books.

Now why many (including myself, to be honest) wouldn’t consider that a problem, it is a problem I’m wrestling with.

See, I’m unpacking my thousands (really.) of books and I’m trying to get a handle on my PC kindle – which updated again and after swearing it was fixing problems, actually didn’t and created more.

I think the biggest problem I’m having is last year, I started series during my challenge and now I want to finish them. Thing is, there are a BUNCH and I fear I’ll have to reread the previous books… and I really want to move FORWARD, not back. And I have a lot of books I want to read that are series. So not one book, but hundreds, because of what they are.

Sigh.

Hence, my problem. And I don’t know which one to start with. The Mary O’Reilly paranormal cozy mysteries, the San Francisco turn of the century cozy mysteries, see I can’t even remember the heroine’s name! There is a HUGE ASS fantasy series I want to start by Morgan Rice… however he’s written two or three and I need to figure them out. And the books look HUGE! There is a series by Joan Hess- well there are TWO of them, but the Maggody series look good. Some years back I read the first 5 installments of the Alex Archer’s Rogue Angel series and now there are 40- something of them.

Oliver Potszch’s Hangman’s Daughter…

Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville series. Kitty is a Werewolf. I had the original 5 and then discovered there were a TON of them as well…

Sue Grafton

Janet Evanovich.

Lexi Blake has 2 or 3 series I’ve NOT read… okay, I started one, the Bliss series…and I”m seeing where Master’s and Mercenaries came from.

le sigh.

Either way – I’m trying to decide what to read first… and make sure they are on my kindle. A lot of these are things I started sometimes 7 years ago… But for now, we have this month’s Zee Reads.

Which was better than last month’s number wise. And with them, I’ve dug my hole deeper. You guessed it. I started a bunch of series.

Cocaine Blues

I’ve acquired a goodly number of these – all of them I think. I understand the television series based on them is quite good. So I started with this one and then remembered there are a bunch of other SERIES I’ve started that I want to finish and now I can add this one too it.

I’ll be honest – Phryne drives me mad. Unfair someone should have that much money just handed to them. Yes, her heart is in a good place, but still…

Devoted

The newest Masters and Mercenaries installment. I’m right sad that there was so little Taggert in it. She’s worn out the Taggert family – except the one the Taggert family thinks is dead, but isn’t. So with this installment, we are now seeing siblings of friends of Taggerts or people who work with Taggerts. And I suspect this trend will continue. She’s wrung out the Taggert story line. So now we start with the people who work with Little Sean Taggert and the people who interact with the Sanctum family. The Taggerts will continue to be my favorite series however.

That said, this was an awesome installment.

The Bards Daughter

And yet ANOTHER beginning of a series I shouldn’t have started. Thing is, this is my appeasement for having to wait for the next Crispin Guest novel, which will come out in August, but it’s simply going to have to wait until the price comes down.

This little prequel is lovely. Set in Wales 1141, it centers around the castle bard, accused of murder and his daughter’s attempts to prove him innocent while finding the real killer before her father is put to death. Initially, it is thought he will just have to pay restitution to the victim’s family, which was the original Welsh sentencing. Granted it would break him and his family, but he would live and go on to sing elsewhere. However, they are starting to feel the weight of England’s move towards Christianity and the need to follow Christian law, which is hanging. Or beheading. Or whatever. The victim’s family seems just as shocked by the sentence as the bard and his family! I appreciated that there was a pronunciation guide at the beginning and that it was about a bard. The Welsh honored their historians and singers and singing for one’s supper and keep was a time-honored tradition. I’m looking forward to setting this series on the To Read list.

Child of GhostsDemonSouled

I’ve had both of this in my to read pile for ages. Both were quick reads and easily digestable.

I would call both of them Dark Fantasy. I have several of each of the series, but I’m uncertain when – or if – I’ll go back to either one.

Child of the Ghosts revolves around Caina Amalas, whose wealthy, influential parents are murdered and she is kidnapped by a mad wizard. Gruesome, horrific scientific experiments are performed on her for years before she escapes and joins a secretive society of assassins and spies. Personally, I have no idea how anyone can survive and live to tell the tale without any sort of psychiatric care. So in large, I found it unbelievable as well as stomach churning.

Demonsouled, on the other hand, had a tortured, but honest main character, who coming home after being exiled for 15 years, finds his home in disarray. Of course. The dead are walking, his sister is blind to the man she’s about to marry. Life just really can’t get any worse for Mazael Cravenlock. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of his exploits and fight against the evil over taking his lands.

It’s NOT all that well written, but the story is engaging. The author finds catch phrases and beats them to death. To be honest, I hope this doesn’t continue.

So at this time, I’m thinking that rather than continue… I’m going to finish the series I’ve started and go from there. The Roman-Britannica series by Jane Finnis, I’ve read 3 of the 4, so perhaps I’ll finish it up and then head on to Terri Read’s Mary O’Reilly’s paranormal mystery series. (She talks to the dead) Interesting concept.  I wonder if there are more installments of Barbara Allen’s Trash n Treasure series. (Her mother is a hoot, her blind, diabetic dog, takes the cake and her personal story will break your heart.)

Too many decisions. The only decision I really want to worry about right now is what am I going to wear – and pack – for my trip down the coast next week and should I REALLY splurge on some seriously dark blue eyeshadow and eyeliner???

A Rainy Beefcake Sunday

A right bitch has rolled into town. Her name is Bonnie and she is leaving a lot of water in her wake. Thankfully, there isn’t really much wind, just lots of slow moving rain. I’m suddenly very thankful for the drainage ditch in my front yard.

Hoping to get a LOT of writing done this week. If I can complete my Big Bang (Dwalin and Tauriel take a walk-about Middle Earth. No romance, no sex. Get over it) this week, I’ll be VERY happy and can resume William Edward’s story. And Gary’s story. And perhaps I’ll throw in some Roger Gisborne for good measure. I initially thought to do a lot of writing (and unpacking) this summer. I have almost 9 weeks to myself. However, That Man has things planned for me and mine this summer – starting with a lovely 3 day excursion waaaaaaaay down the Atlantic Coast. I’ve never been that far south before and I’ll be hard pressed not to continue all the way to Key West, just ‘cuz. Sadly, we are trying to cough up funds for 2 tickets to Dragoncon and we need to buy them before July 15th before prices go up again and then we’ll have to figure out accommodations. Those will not be cheap either.

And food.

But we are looking forward to TWO lighthouses, and a Japanese museum and garden (Spawn is really looking forward to all of that!) and I’m hoping for a romantic moonlit walk on the beach.

So along with the rain and dealing with a low-grade backache (I did too much yesterday, between the cleaning of the oven, hanging a large shelf – I swear I am getting REALLY good with tools!) and eyeballing the Tylenol and beefcake.

Speaking of beefcake… it is time for…

I was going to go knit today, but the rain has kept me in. I’m overdue for a Tolkien Marathon. I think I”ll start it… and knit.

Have a lovely Sunday!

I am done and done and done! Well until the butt-end of July, but I am DONE! I am now counting down the days I meet with Suitor for 2 nights and 3 days of fun down the Atlantic Coast! WHOOOSH! 10 days. We have plans to meet up and take short jaunts (2-4 days) all through the summer and it is our hope to be able to weekend meet at least ONCE a month when school starts! My car is getting ready to see some miles.

I absolutely pissed off and terrified my custodial staff this week after the kids left. See, I look at it this way – I have 4 days to clean up and organize my room NOW as I won’t be given that luxury come July/August when we report back. We will be busy busy busy with pre-planning and stuff and I won’t be given a moment’s peace when I come back, and they have ALL FLIPPIN’ SUMMER to do their thing. Not to mention I was told that me gaining access to my room, much less the building would be fairly…. uhm… no. (ANd it was confirmed, we are NOT going to be allowed on the premises at all until the day we return. We are on VACATION! Whether we want to be or not!) So I have 4 days to clean out my storage closet – which I haven’t been able to get more than 3 feet into since January – as well as move my room around. I had bookcases and instruments that HAVE to be put away. Truthfully, I would have preferred to put in floor to ceiling shelves to safely stack stuff. Not to mention I had a shitload of school stuff in my garage. (And still have quite a bit but I’ll deal with that as I go next year.)

So last week I started bringing stuff… and Monday I brought a carload – and I do mean a CAR LOAD of stuff and I tore out my storage closet.

IMG_20160524_151816IMG_20160524_151816_1IMG_20160525_143836IMG_20160525_143857

Yes, even HE was absolutely unimpressed!

tumblr_nlg94eE4Cp1si7vy2o1_400

But even after I added a book case and the instrument cubby, my storage closet looked like this!

IMG_20160524_131945

For the record, that’s 3 long bookcases, a cubby shelf (that I obviously use for instruments) and 2 long computer desks. What you DON”T see is the two storage closets behind me.

On Wednesday, custodial staff came in, took one look and said – this isn’t getting better. And I said – Yes it is.

IMG_20160525_143802IMG_20160525_143844IMG_20160526_123515IMG_20160526_145137

And then I added – I know I’m a pig. Head Custodian snorted and said – you haven’t been down in the 4th and 5th grade wing, have you?

And then I informed her I had raided one of the schools that is moving into a new building and because their room was much SMALLER (same thing is going to happen to me!) I’m kinda bringing in more keyboards… and books….

And there was a great gnashing of teeth.

On Thursday morning I discovered THIS left in my room.

IMG_20160526_123449

And I thanked them profusely.

This last set was taken about 1 hour before I left. When I left, there was NOTHING in the floor, nothing on the tables – actually my area was clean, the white bookcase behind my desk has been transformed into neatly arranged  office supplies – I swear, I don’t remember WHO I raided in a previously life, but I have enough staples, paper clips, rubber bands and pens to last 2 more lifetimes and enough pencils to last me 2 years! – separated into clear never-used terrariums and they are labeled! Not to mention 2 large baskets – for lined and unlined paper, God I’m so organized, we’ll see how long that lasts – on the top. And the bookcase on the wall between my filing cabinets is much neater. And all the water came home!

IMG_20160526_145123IMG_20160526_145126

Of course the storage room looks like this, but I can get to everything!

IMG_20160526_145159

(I didn’t get pictures because the custodial staff was locking the gates at 4. Sheesh. You think they were in a rush to get rid of us!)

HAPPY SUNDAY!!!!

And how are we all???

I am DONE with my first year teaching in this school. I see me here for a few years, but not forever and hopefully not for many. I need to have a long sit-down with Suitor. He wants us to pull up stakes and move further north in a few years (when his baby girl graduates college) but I have a few issues (retirement) that will need to be discussed.

Either or, kiddos are gone until August 3rd and I have 4 to 5 days – depending on who you talk to – of post planning. I won’t be able to access my classroom this summer, so Spawn and I are going to attempt to get as much of my school stuff to school this week and unpacked, etc etc etc.

Regardless I plan on having an honest to goodness VACATION this summer, most of it short jaunts here and there. I’m also planning on doing Dragoncon FINALLY again for the first time in ages and ages and ages.

The Muses are digging at me Rapscallions each and every one.

Anyway – without much further ado, the very much overdue BeefCake edition.

Before I start, if you haven’t seen this lovely porn that Guylty left on my blog earlier this week – for God’s sake, go look!!!

This edition is extra-large (ahem) because I’ve missed 2 weeks.
