I am in a foul mood.
It might have something to do with the Left’s determination to rebrand everything, even though the majority of us don’t want it rebranded!
Aunt Jemima’s family is pissed. Pissed I say.
Eskimo pies… who is OFFENDED by Eskimo pies????
Uncle Ben’s, Stubbs BBQ, Mrs. Butterworth’s…
I’m tellin’ you… I’m really TIRED of this shit-show.
There. That was my political rant of the year.
Seeing how this year has gone, has anyone check the oceans for dolphins?
Screw it.
Sigh
Let’s just go to some GuyCandy Monday…
I feel a strong need to comment on this post.
First, “cracker” in Cracker Jack” has nothing to do with race and is only the same word by coincidence. So, not the same.
Second, my question to you is: if particular language or branding is hurtful to some people because it makes them feel judged as being “less than” and if it doesn’t hurt you either way, then why do you feel a need to object?
You see – the whole ‘cracker’ thing is a joke. it’s poking fun at the rest of the stuff, which is equally – a joke. Or should be.
Second, no one demanded that Quaker Oats – who owns Aunt Jemima and Quaker Oats is owned by Pepsi – change the brand. Aunt Jemima was a beloved REAL person at the turn of the century. She was known to be one amazing cook! There is NOTHING deragatory about using her image for a brand she helped create. Her grandchildren are furious that Quaker has done this. Same with all the other brand name changes. NO one said squat.
Not to mention, if every brand was represented by a white person, those who aren’t white would complain they weren’t represented.
Eskimo Pie. Nope. No one.
Yet, no one is saying anything about the Quaker on Quaker Oats. The little boy on Cracker Jack is just as offensive – saying he’s not. What’s happening isn’t a sudden ‘wokeness’ – it’s companies trying to head off any potential bad mouthing. It’s really sad.
I object because of the Ass-hatery going on. A couple tried to drive through an Atlanta neighborhood, going to the interstate. They were stopped and told – white people can’t drive this street! They they had rocks thrown at their vehicle, the driver was punched in the face several times. We’ve had more reports of nooses that weren’t…. and a NASCAR driver who legitimately had one hung in his garage.
And am I NOT allowed to protest, unless I protest authorized subjects?
You do NOT want to know what bullshit is going on in Music Education right now. I’m beyond appalled.
Yes, I do understand that the “cracker” thing is a joke, but it is meant to say that the idea of changing Aunt Jemima is ludicrous and I’m just saying that it’s not the same thing.
Quaker Oats is entitled, though, to change things if it thinks that’s the right thing to do. This is not the first time that they have changed the Aunt Jemima image, which originally was the “mammy” image wearing a kerchief. Change comes with changes in attitudes in the outside world.
Aunt Jemima was not a real person, though. She originally was a character in a minstrel show. Various actors/cooks were hired to play the pancake/syrup character. Some of them were famous and helped to build the brand, as you say. From what I’ve read, some of the women’s relatives are not in favour of the change. Others find the logo offensive and would prefer it to be changed, but want the history preserved through plaques, festivals, etc.
I’m not even sure we have Eskimo Pies here anymore. But given that the people we used to call Eskimos are now called Inuit, I tend to want to call people what they would like to be called. “Eskimo” is not what “the people” (which is what “Inuit” means) call themselves.
Maybe the Quaker should be changed too. Probably not Cracker Jack, as that was modeled after the founder’s son who died young, I think. i.e. it was his relative’s picture to use.
Personally, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a company trying to change with the times. There used to be a commercial that said, “My wife… I think I’ll keep her.” We wouldn’t really have a commercial like that now. is it sad when beloved brands change? Sure, but maybe that is the lesser hurt.
Of course you can protest and/or post about whatever subjects you like. Unless you close the comments, though, people may comment. I’m not spoiling for a fight or anything. Just expressing my opinion. Rational discourse, as you have said you would like to have.
